Sequels and Franchises still dominating the box office

Sequels and franchises still dominated the box office this past weekend with features such as "Transformers: Age of Extinction" coming in number one and 22 Jump Street coming in at number three, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" coming in at number 5 and "Think Like a Man Too" coming in 9th at the box office. But what is it about sequels that makes them so successful? Is it the storyline? The characters? Is there a secret formula out there that we just don't know about or is it staring us right in the face?

When asked, LMG Entertainment's Woodie Lesesne said that sequels are usually taken from book series such as Harry Potter or comic books like Marvel. "What keeps them at the top is that they have a built in fan base, often spanning over several generations. Parents and their kids. As long as directors keep it interesting and exciting fans will come back for more." says Woodie Lesesne.

In most cases we have already been introduced to the characters and their stories through books or comics in our childhood so we come back for more because it's comforting. That makes sense. But what about the big guys in Hollywood? Why do they care to stick with the same old stories we've grown accustom to instead of making something hot, new and fresh? Well the answer is simple. Sometimes those new and fresh ideas aren't as successful as they may hope and sequels are safer.

"Sequels are going to be made as long as they continue to make money." Says Tony Lesesne of LMG Entertainment. He goes on to say "sequels extend the life span of a franchise and oftentimes provide an opportunity to deepen the brand of a particular studio. You don't have to have a blockbuster film with an extravagant budget to make a sequel. You simply have to have a good story with characters that fans are already familiar with."

With that being said, here are the top ten weekend box office results:

1. In its second week in theaters, Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed about $37 million
this weekend with a total gross of about $175 million, not quite breaking its budget of $210

a total gross of a little over $15 million.
